Junior Riparian Professionals
The Junior Riparian Professionals (JRP) project is a six- to 12-month training programme for young professionals from the Lower and Upper Mekong Regions that focuses on strengthening knowledge and skills in the domain of Integrated Water Resource Management.
Young professionals selected for the programme are trained in different IWRM-related disciplines, including:
- IWRM principles
- Stakeholder engagement
- Basin development planning
- Strategic planning
- Project cycle management
- Gender equality
- Communication
- Monitoring and evaluation
- Climate change adaptation
The project’s overall aim is to develop and strengthen IWRM expertise and professionalism in the Mekong region.
The JRP project is open to nationals from the Mekong countries below the age of 35, with excellent command of English, a Master’s degree in relevant subjects and professional experience in a water-related discipline. Young professionals eligible for the programme include young men and women from government agencies, universities and river basin organisations from the four Member Countries and the Dialogue Partner Countries.
Some Junior Riparian Professionals go on to work at the MRC Secretariat after completing their training course. Others return to their positions at the National Mekong Committee or government ministry where they worked before joining the project.
I’ve developed self-confidence and cultural sensitivity by working with people from different countries. I’ve developed my modelling skills, and gained new knowledge about running, calibrating, and validating models, thanks to the JRP programme.
Trust and friendship are among the most important things I’ve gained from my JRP time with the MRC. I’ve learned how China-MRC cooperation could be uplifted when the level of trust and understanding increases. And I surely will be one of the catalysts to make this happen.
I am blessed to have joined the JRP programme at the MRC, for I’ve gained new friendship, learned how the MRC works, and expanded my soft and hard skills that will be essential to my career. A wonderful programme for young professionals I’ve highly recommend to anyone.
It is a splendid programme for junior staff. This programme not only increases one’s basic knowledge about the MRC (structure, activities, mandates), but also creates an environment in which junior staff from different riparian countries can share their cultures, experiences and customs.
Networking with professionals helped broaden my future job connection opportunities and gain practical experience - not only through working hands-on in the field, but also by seeing what my colleagues were doing.
A lot of MRC work requires GIS analysis. MRC is the place to equip yourself with advanced skills, while at the same time contributing your solid technical knowledge for regional benefit.
