Abstract

While rice farming in the Lower Mekong Basin (LMB) is vital for the economy, rural livelihoods, and food security, it has environmental drawbacks including high water use and methane emissions. Traditionally sustainable rice farming now faces challenges due to socio-economic changes and climate issues. Intermittent Irrigation could be a solution, reducing water use and methane emissions by alternating irrigation and drainage. This guidance explains the methodology, benefits, and constraints of Intermittent Irrigation based on research conducted in the LMB.
